Daily Hero

The year was 1982 and American prayed for a hero with dashing good looks, who drove around in a talking Pontiac Trans Am.  A lot of bad things were happening in the world.  Justice seemed to be an old fashioned term that didn’t mean anything anymore. 

The Iran-Contra scandal, Falklands War, and a woman being appointed to the Supreme Court were all still fresh in our minds and we were wary to put our faith and hopes into any one man or person of authority.  Things were looking bad for America and the world. 

But then again, they say that the Lord works in mysterious ways. 

Perhaps it was because an actor was in the White House, or perhaps it was because you could get lost just staring into his eyes, but those prayers were answered with the debut of Michael Knight the star of Knight Rider.   

Michael Long was a young undercover cop who had his whole life in front of him when he was brutally shot in the face during a sting gone bad.  His life was saved but he required plastic surgery that coincidentally made him the most gorgeous man to ever walk the Earth.  With his new face came a new name, Michael Knight.  And with his new name came a new car K.I.T.T.

K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand) was the talking Trans Am that we had all been waiting for.  KITT was a car made by F.L.A.G. (Foundation for Law and Government) a crime-fighting arm of the Knight Foundation, the same people who saved Michael’s life.  He had artificial intelligence, could drive himself, and respond to Michael with hilarious zingers.  KITT was like a cross between Speed Racer’s car and that dirty Italian guy down the street who is always working on his Trans Am to add 20 horsepower.

Together Michael Knight and KITT formed a union so perfect that it could only have been created in Heaven. 

When the two of them would drive around righting the wrongs of the world, one couldn’t help but wish they were right there with Michael and KITT, cruising the highways of California, listening to KITT’s voice that strangely reminded us of someone’s dad or maybe a caring principal.

Michael wasn’t into using guns, and much like Macgyver he had incredible hair.  And just like Captain Kirk, Michael Knight was all about the ladies.  His intense stare, and overwhelming good looks made it impossible for women to resist him.  His unwavering dedication to justice and tight pants makes him today’s Daily Hero.
